During Chinese President Xi Jinping‘s recent visit to the United States, a wave of protests erupted, highlighting the deep-seated discontent among various groups towards his policies and governance. As Xi Jinping met with President Biden at the APEC leaders’ summit, his presence was met with significant opposition from various groups, including Chinese pro-democracy activists, human rights advocates, and members of the Tibetan, Uyghur, and Hong Kong communities. These protesters, many of whom are living in exile, are increasingly vocal against the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) policies, despite potential repercussions.
Anna Kwok, an exiled Hong Kong activist, expressed her determination to expose the true nature of Xi Jinping and the CCP’s totalitarian rule. Despite facing online abuse, she and others like her remain undeterred in their mission to bring international attention to these issues. Tibetan protester Phurbu highlighted the lack of human rights and ongoing genocide in Tibet as his reasons for protesting.
The protests were marked by symbolic gestures and displays. Uyghurs wore chains and blindfolds to symbolize the genocide of their people, a description officially recognized by Washington. Tibetan flags, the blue-and-white crescent flag of East Turkestan, and the black Hong Kong protest flag were prominently displayed, alongside posters commemorating the Tiananmen massacre and banners calling for Xi‘s resignation.
