More than 300 Tibetans and human rights supporters gathered at Taipei’s Liberty Square on July 15 to honor Lobga Rangzen and protest China’s Ethnic Unity Law. Participants observed a minute of silence, offered white khatas, recited prayers and tore copies of the legislation. Taiwan Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim said Rangzen’s death drew attention to the continuing erosion of Tibetans’ fundamental rights. Kelsang Gyaltsen Bawa said the vigil sent a message that Tibetans would not remain silent. The gathering followed Rangzen’s self-immolation outside the United Nations Headquarters in New York on July 2.
