Wu Yingjie, former Communist Party secretary of Tibet, received a suspended death sentence for accepting 343 million yuan ($47.78 million) in bribes, according to state-run Xinhua news agency. A Beijing court sentenced the 68-year-old on Wednesday to death with a two-year reprieve, meaning the sentence converts to life imprisonment if he commits no further crimes. Wu served various roles in Tibet's Communist Party and government between 2006 and 2021. The United States and Canada previously sanctioned him over alleged human rights violations. All his ill-gotten gains will be confiscated, Xinhua reported.
