Experts Say China’s ‘Fake’ Panchen Lama Ceremony Reflects Fear, Not Faith

Chinese authorities reportedly forced thousands of Tibetans to attend a four-day Kalachakra ceremony led by Beijing-appointed Panchen Lama Gyaltsen Norbu in Shigatse, Tibet, from 9–12 October, Phayul reported. Analysts told StratNews Global that the state-organised ritual sought to project religious harmony but revealed tight political control and widespread fear rather than faith. Security was heavy, and senior monks were required to attend. Experts said the event formed part of China’s long-running campaign to undermine the Dalai Lama and promote the Sinicisation of Tibetan Buddhism, turning sacred teachings into demonstrations of state power.
