Chinese AI startup DeepSeek has reportedly confiscated employees' passports to prevent them from leaving the country, according to The Information. DeepSeek's parent company, High-Flyer, is restricting travel for key staff, particularly in R&D, amid government concerns over data security. Beijing has also tightened control over DeepSeek’s investments, calling it a “national treasure.” The Verge’s Kylie Robison cited sources suggesting the move aims to prevent leaks of trade or state secrets. This comes as China escalates AI competition with the US and warns researchers against traveling abroad. The Guardian previously reported DeepSeek’s AI follows strict censorship rules.
