In the wake of a severe earthquake off the east coast of Taiwan, His Holiness the Dalai Lama reached out to President Tsai Ing-wen, expressing his deep sorrow over the tragedy that resulted in loss of life and widespread destruction. The message highlighted his prayers for the victims and admiration for the government’s rapid response.
The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.4, struck near Hualien, causing the death of nine individuals and injuring over a thousand, as reported by BBC News. The epicenter was located 18 kilometers south of Hualien. The quake led to more than 200 aftershocks, some measuring 6.5 or higher, complicating rescue and relief operations. Authorities anticipate more aftershocks in the coming days, adding to the challenges faced by the affected communities.
In his heartfelt message, the Dalai Lama conveyed his condolences to the President, the families of those affected, and praised the Taiwanese government and agencies for their swift action in the face of adversity. “I pray for those who have lost their lives,” he wrote, extending his sympathy to all who are grappling with the aftermath of this natural disaster.

The earthquake’s impact was felt strongly in Taipei as well, where residents experienced violent tremors. This event marks the strongest quake felt in Taiwan in decades, reviving memories of the 1999 quake that resulted in 2,400 deaths and the collapse of 5,000 buildings. The resilience of the Taiwanese people is being tested once again as they navigate the aftermath of this disaster.
