In the wake of a devastating earthquake in central Japan, His Holiness the Dalai Lama has reached out with a message of sympathy and spiritual support. Addressing Japan‘s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, His Holiness conveyed his deep sadness over the loss of life and destruction caused by the earthquake. Reuters reported that this powerful quake resulted in numerous fatalities and widespread damage, affecting countless lives.
“I am saying prayers for those who have lost their lives and offer my sympathy and condolences to their families and others affected by this calamity,” His Holiness the Dalai Lama wrote in his heartfelt message.
He is currently in Bodhgaya, India, the site of Buddha’s enlightenment, and has committed to reciting the ‘Heart Sutra’ with fellow Buddhists and pilgrims at this sacred place. This Buddhist text is believed to bring benefits to those who have passed away and potentially prevent future disasters.
As reported by Reuters, the earthquake struck central Japan on Monday with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6. It was the strongest quake in the region in over four decades, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The tremor not only caused significant property and infrastructure damage but also led to power outages affecting tens of thousands of homes. Residents in some coastal areas were prompted to seek safety on higher ground.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) initially issued a major tsunami warning for Ishikawa prefecture, the first since the tragic March 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Fortunately, the warning was later downgraded and eventually reduced to an advisory.
His Holiness the Dalai Lama‘s message emphasizes compassion and solidarity in these trying times. “I appreciate that the Japanese Government is doing everything it can to bring relief and support to those in need,” he acknowledged in his letter. His call for recitation of the ‘Heart Sutra’ reflects the deep spiritual connection and support extended to the people of Japan by the Buddhist community.
