Chinese international student Zhang Yadi, also known as Tara, has gone missing after returning to China from France to visit family. The 22-year-old, an editor for Chinese Youth Stand for Tibet, disappeared on 30 July in Shangri-La, Yunnan. Advocacy groups fear she was detained on charges of “endangering national security” linked to her activism on Tibet. Human Rights Watch called the case transnational repression, warning that overseas students face surveillance and risks for their work abroad. Zhang was due to begin studies in London this month. Her whereabouts remain unknown.
