China has begun construction of the world's largest hydropower dam on Tibet's Yarlung Tsangpo river, which flows into India as the Brahmaputra. Chinese Premier Li Qiang attended the groundbreaking ceremony Saturday, according to state media. The $167 billion project in Nyingchi region near India's border will generate 300 billion kilowatt-hours annually, three times more than China's Three Gorges Dam. India and Bangladesh have raised concerns about water security and environmental impacts downstream. Experts warn China could use the dam to control water flow, potentially affecting millions. The project may displace Tibetans and destroy monasteries in the biodiverse region.
