China has released new “standard” names for 27 locations in Arunachal Pradesh—India’s northeast state—which Beijing claims as part of itselt. The renamed sites include mountains, rivers, and passes, listed in Chinese, Tibetan, and pinyin, with coordinates and maps. India strongly rejected the move, calling it “vain and preposterous,” affirming Arunachal as an “integral and inalienable” part of the country. The move, announced by China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs, comes amid ongoing efforts to ease bilateral tensions, but signals renewed friction over border claims.
