China Rejects Middle Way, Warns India on Dalai Lama Reincarnation

China's embassy in New Delhi criticized the Middle Way Approach on June 11, saying it seeks to advance Tibetan independence through what Beijing called a "Greater Tibetan Region." Embassy spokesperson Yu Jing also said the Dalai Lama's reincarnation is an internal Chinese matter to be handled under Chinese law and historical practice. The Middle Way Approach, advocated by the exile Tibetan leadership, calls for genuine autonomy, not independence. Beijing also urged India to avoid actions it says could affect India-China relations as discussions continue over the Dalai Lama's future succession.
