China Intensifies Crackdown in Hainan Tibetan Prefecture

Tibet Times reported on June 16, 2026, that Chinese authorities intensified restrictions across Hainan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture after Xiong Yuanlai became Communist Party secretary in April. The measures cover Chabcha, Trika, Mangra, Ba and Dragkar counties. Sources inside Tibet said officials demolished and buried hundreds of Mani stone mounds, burned prayer flags and household flagpoles, and ordered every family to hoist China’s national flag. One source estimated that more than 90 percent of the region’s Mani stone mounds had been buried. The report also said Tibetan employees were dismissed and replaced by Chinese officials.
