China Imposes Strict Security on Tibetan Monastery During Saga Dawa

Chinese authorities have imposed severe restrictions at the Ösel Thegchok Monastery in Tibet during the sacred month of Saga Dawa following the arbitrary detention of its abbot, Choktrul Dorje Ten Rinpoche. Security personnel are barring outsiders from entering the premises and strictly prohibiting the sharing of any information regarding the detained spiritual leader. Rinpoche disappeared in December 2025 shortly before the state forcibly closed his vocational high school, which was one of the last remaining privately run Tibetan educational institutions. Human rights advocates warn these escalating measures reflect a broader strategy to systematically erase Tibetan linguistic and cultural identity.
