China has attempted to reassure India about its massive Yarlung Tsangpo dam in Tibet, amid concerns over water shortages and environmental damage to the Brahmaputra River downstream. Chinese diplomat Wang Lei wrote in Indian Express that the dam would not harm neighboring countries and rejected accusations of “water hegemony.” Despite China’s claims of ecological safeguards, the project, which aims to generate triple the power of the Three Gorges Dam, has sparked fears in India, prompting it to accelerate its own hydropower projects on the Brahmaputra. The dam remains a point of tension despite recent efforts to improve bilateral relations.
