China announced plans to increase its coast guard patrols around Taiwanese islands, escalating tensions following an incident that resulted in the deaths of two Chinese nationals. The individuals died near Kinmen, a Taiwanese island, after their speedboat capsized while evading Taiwan’s coast guard, as reported by Reuters on February 18.

Taiwan Defends Its Coast Guard Actions

Taiwan stood by its coast guard’s actions, stating the Chinese speedboat was too close to Kinmen. The island and others like Matsu are close to China‘s coast and have seen increased activity from Chinese fishing boats and vessels, raising concerns from Taiwan.

China Labels Incident as ‘Wicked’

Beijing condemned the incident, calling Taiwan‘s actions near Kinmen’s Beiding islet “wicked.” The Chinese coast guard’s statement emphasized strengthening law enforcement to maintain order and protect fishermen’s safety in waters around Kinmen and Xiamen, a city facing Kinmen.

Dispute Over Maritime Boundaries

China‘s Taiwan Affairs Office expressed strong indignation over the deaths but stated that traditional fishing grounds in the Xiamen-Kinmen area have always been used by fishermen from both sides, denying the existence of restricted waters. Taiwan, however, maintains its stance on banning unauthorized Chinese access around Kinmen, refuting claims of forceful expulsions.

Historical Context of Kinmen and Matsu

Kinmen and Matsu have been under Taipei’s control since the Chinese civil war ended in 1949. Despite their transformation into tourist destinations, they remain heavily fortified and largely restricted to civilians. Taiwan accuses China of engaging in grey-zone warfare tactics, including the use of civilian ships to challenge Taiwanese waters.

Diplomatic Engagement Amid Tensions

In a separate development, Chinese officials from Shanghai attended Taipei’s Lantern Festival, despite the ongoing tensions. Taipei’s Mayor, however, chose not to meet the visiting group, emphasizing the strained relations between the two sides.

This increase in patrols by China near Taiwanese-controlled islands marks a significant escalation in the ongoing tensions between China and Taiwan, highlighting the delicate balance of power and sovereignty in the region.
