China Aims to Mend Relations with Canada, Rejects Human-Rights Criticism

China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi met Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly in Beijing, seeking to restore relations strained by the 2018 detention of Canadians Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor and allegations of Chinese interference in Canada. While Wang emphasized the need for stable relations, he firmly rejected any criticism of China’s human rights record and its stance on Taiwan. Joly reiterated Canada's commitment to human rights and democracy, criticizing Chinese interference. Despite differences, both sides agreed to maintain open communication and explore collaboration on various issues.
