The Senate Committee of the United States Congress passed a resolution recognizing Arunachal Pradesh as an integral part of India. Sponsored by Senators Tim Kaine (D-VA) and Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), the resolution received support from Senator Jeff Merkley of Oregon, Senator Bill Hegerty of Tennessee, and Senator John Cornyn of Texas.
Senator Merkley, co-chair of the Senate Committee – Congressional-Executive on China Commission, emphasized the importance of upholding freedom and a rules-based order worldwide. He stated, “By passage of this resolution, the Committee affirms that the United States views Arunachal Pradesh as part of the Republic of India and supports like-minded people in the region.”
Senator Hegerty underscored the need for the United States to stand up for its strategic partners in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly India. He stated, “At a time when China poses serious threats to a free and open Indo-Pacific region, it is important for the United States to stand shoulder to shoulder with India.”
The resolution rejects China’s claim on large parts of Arunachal Pradesh and recognizes the McMahon Line as the international border between China and Arunachal Pradesh. It aims to counter China’s expansionist strategy in the South and East China Seas, the Himalayas, and the South Pacific.
Senator Cornyn highlighted the importance of defending democracy and supporting a free and open Indo-Pacific. He stated, “The United States must stand firm in defence of democracy by supporting a free and open Indo-Pacific. This resolution confirms that Arunachal Pradesh is part of the Republic of India.”
“As tensions between India and China escalate over their shared border, the United States must stand strong in our defence of democracy by supporting a free and open Indo-Pacific,” said Senator Cornyn.
This resolution strengthens the relationship between the United States and India, reaffirming the commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific. By recognizing Arunachal Pradesh as an integral part of India, the United States supports India’s sovereignty and aligns with like-minded nations in the region sending a clear message that the United States remains committed to its values and supporting its partners in upholding a stable and rules-based international order.
