Washington DC: The Capitol Hill buzzed with respect and admiration as dignitaries and lawmakers gathered to commemorate the 16th anniversary of the US Congressional Gold Medal being awarded to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. The prestigious event was highlighted by the presence of notable figures, as mentioned by Tibet.net, which included Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi and famous actor turned activist, Richard Gere, among others.

In a show of bipartisan solidarity, the US has consistently supported His Holiness and the Tibetan cause. Pelosi, a vocal supporter, heralded the medal conferment as “a source of pride”. In her address, she highlighted the invaluable contributions of Richard Gere, the International Campaign for Tibet Chair. She praised Gere for his unyielding dedication, stating he worked relentlessly “to attract people to not only His Holiness, but to the cause of Tibet”, according to Tibet.net.

Congressman Chris Smith also acknowledged His Holiness the Dalai Lama‘s far-reaching influence, transcending political divides. Emphasizing Gere’s role, Smith credited him for his “enormous persuasive power” which benefitted Tibet‘s cause greatly.

Jim McGovern, another staunch advocate for His Holiness the Dalai Lama, lauded him for his peaceful approach, particularly his anti-war stance. He urged China to actively engage with the Dalai Lama, aiming for a peaceful solution to the ongoing Sino-Tibet conflict.

Highlighting the global resonance of Tibet’s situation, Congresswoman Betty McCollum emphasized the universal need to champion human rights. “We cannot be passive about what is going on in Tibet,” she remarked, as quoted by Tibet.net. McCollum also expressed gratitude to the Tibetan community for sharing this significant occasion with her and others.

Recounting a personal meeting with His Holiness during a challenging period in her life, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky shared the solace and gratitude she felt after their interaction.

Sikyong Penpa Tsering, representing the Tibetan leadership, captured the essence of the ceremony. He remarked on the profound significance of the award, saying, “This award is a huge honour for Tibetans suffering inside Tibet as it represents the sustenance of their indomitable spirit even after 64 years of Chinese suppression”, as reported by Tibet.net.

Reflecting on the day the medal was first awarded, Richard Gere shared his memories and emotions. He spoke of how the moment felt as though the Dalai Lama was the one bestowing an award upon America, embracing the nation’s democratic values.

The ceremony, filled with respect, unity, and admiration for the spiritual leader of Tibet, concluded with a touching performance by the local Tibetan community, celebrating the enduring spirit of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
