In a recent incident reported by Tibet Watch, two monks from Lab Gaden Monastery in Eastern Tibet were detained by local police. The arrests, which occurred around March 10, are based on suspicions of the monks having contacts with Tibetans living abroad.

The incident unfolded at Lab Gaden Dongag Shedup Phelgye Ling, located in Tridu County of the Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, when police, without prior notice, arrived with photographs of several monks, leading to questioning and searches before detaining two individuals.

A source close to Tibet Watch revealed, “The police arrested the monks suspecting them of contacting Tibetans outside of Tibet and exchanging photos and videos through mobile apps. The specifics of the shared content remain unclear.”

The source added that, despite it being over a week since the arrests, information about the detainees’ whereabouts or personal details is hard to come by due to heightened surveillance and restrictions in the area, especially around the monastery.

Lab Gaden Monastery, a home and educational center for over 3,000 monks, is recognized for its commitment to providing a conducive learning environment and comfortable living conditions for its residents. This incident has raised concerns about the freedom and safety of the monastery’s inhabitants and highlights ongoing issues related to surveillance and restrictions in Tibetan areas.

The situation remains closely watched by those advocating for human rights and religious freedom in the region.
