Dharamsala, India — As the global community observed World Rivers Day this past Sunday, the Tibetan Women’s Association (TWA) held a significant event in McLeod Ganj, Dharamsala. Highlighting the pivotal role that Tibet plays in being the origin of some of Asia’s major rivers, TWA officials emphasized the emerging threats these rivers face.

Quoting the event’s organizers, “The origin of major rivers of Asia is Tibet. With China’s ongoing endeavors to divert these rivers and its consistent efforts in dam construction, the need for active river conservation becomes paramount. It remains our inherent duty to protect these water sources and champion a cleaner environment.”

As per ANI news, the day’s importance traces back to 2005, when Mark Angelo, the mastermind behind World Rivers Day, introduced the idea to shed light on the world’s rivers’ significance. This year’s theme, “the rights of rivers,” beckons the global population to recognize rivers as national treasures. It advocates for heightened measures against waste dumping and pollution in these rivers.

The environmental desk of the Tibetan Women’s Association, as reported by ANI, specifically underscored the relevance of Tibet’s rivers. Housing some of the continent’s longest and most critical rivers such as the Yangtze, Yellow River, and Brahmaputra, Tibet stands as a beacon of freshwater supply. This unique position has earned it the title of “the third pole” due to its extensive glacier coverage and vast freshwater sources.

The objective of World Rivers Day, celebrated every fourth Sunday of September, is simple yet profound: raise awareness about the significance of rivers, emphasize their conservation, and address present-day challenges they face.

By consistently advocating for these invaluable water sources and drawing attention to their significance, entities like the Tibetan Women’s Association play a crucial role in the ongoing global conversation around environmental conservation.
