Bir, India – Himachal Pradesh witnessed a heartfelt tribute to a fallen hero on Tibetan Democracy Day, September 2nd. The Bir Tibetan Settlement inaugurated the “Shaheed Sepoy Kalsang Dojree Road” to honor the memory of Special Frontier Force (SFF) Tibetan army soldier, Kalsang Dorjee, as reported by Tibet Express.

The ceremony saw the presence of Shri Kishori Lal, the MLA of Baijnath town and Chief Parliamentary Secretary, as the chief guest. The local Tibetan community gathered in large numbers to witness the unveiling of a concrete gate structure adorned with the eight auspicious signs on two columns, proudly displaying the new road’s name.

Kalsang Dorjee, a native of the Bir Tibetan Settlement, tragically lost his life at the young age of 23 during an operation at Point 4438 on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Sub Sector Battalik, “OP RAKSHAK,” in Jammu and Kashmir on October 12, 2003. He was part of Bravo Company, 3 Vikas of SFF.

The memorial project was spearheaded by Choephel, a former SFF member now serving in the Tibetan Security office. The late soldier’s mother, Tsewang Bhuti, generously financed the construction of the gate, with the Bir Tibetan Society and Bir Local Tibetan Assembly overseeing its completion.

The SFF, also known as Establishment-22, was formed in 1962 in response to the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China’s unexpected offensive into Indian territory. While its initial mission was to counter Chinese aggression, the SFF has since played pivotal roles in various significant Indian military operations. Notably, during the Bangladesh War, the SFF’s ‘Operation Eagle’ was instrumental in India’s victory. The force also participated in the 1984 Operation Meghdoot to secure the Siachen Glacier and the Kargil War’s Operation Vijay in 1999.

The sacrifices of the SFF soldiers, like Nyima Tenzin, who lost his life in a landmine explosion near the Chinese border in 2020, underline the unit’s dedication and valor. This road naming ceremony stands as a testament to the bravery of these soldiers and the deep appreciation of the Tibetan and Indian communities they serve.
