On March 5, 2024, Phuntsok, a Tibetan man from the Upper-tso Township in Lhundrup County, Tibet, was taken into custody by Chinese police under allegations of disseminating secret documents. The incident, reported by Tibet Times, occurred abruptly as Phuntsok was visiting the county town, leading to immediate arrest by three police officers.

Despite efforts by his family to obtain information about his whereabouts and the reasons behind his detention, authorities have denied any requests for communication or visitation.

Sources close to the situation suggest that Phuntsok has been accused by the Chinese government of sending confidential documents outside of China and has previously been critical of local leadership for neglecting the welfare of the community.

Phuntsok, a father of two, with a fifteen-year-old daughter and an eleven-year-old son, is known within his village in Lhundrup County.

The arrest has raised concerns among local Tibetans and human rights advocates over the continued suppression of freedom of expression and the harsh measures taken against those perceived as dissenters by the Chinese authorities.

This event underscores the ongoing tensions within Tibet and the Chinese government’s vigilant efforts to control information flow and punish those who challenge or criticize its policies.
