Dehradun, India — Emphasizing the pressing need for the preservation of Tibetan language and culture in the face of China’s oppressive policies, the Department of Education, Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), organized a Literary and Cultural Meet on October 6, 2023. The grand gathering, which took place at the Tibetan Homes School in Mussoorie, witnessed enthusiastic participation from several Tibetan schools in the region.

Circuit Justice Commissioner Lhodruk, the chief guest, shed light on the troubling decline of Tibetan language and culture due to Beijing’s suppression. Citing instances of reducing Tibetan classes to a mere once-a-week session and recent moves to cut off opportunities for Tibetan language education altogether, he painted a somber picture of China’s approach in Tibet. “The preservation of our language and culture is paramount, and our schools here in exile have a crucial role in that journey,” he remarked, as reported by Tibet.net.

This crucial role was further highlighted by the Head of the Academic Section at the Department of Education, Tenzin Dorjee. The meet was described as a vital platform for “developing students’ literary skills and facilitating the exchange of experience to enhance their abilities.” Encouraging participation as a form of learning, he urged the students to immerse themselves in the activities fully.

Day one of the event was marked by spirited debates and poetry recitations in both Tibetan and English, offering a glimpse into the rich literary tradition of Tibet. While the second day saw competitions in speech, singing, and dance, showcasing the region’s vast cultural heritage.

With a total of 142 students and 14 teachers from various schools, including Sambhota Tibetan School Mussoorie, Tibetan Homes School Rajpur, and TCV Selakui, the event was a testament to the resilience of the Tibetan community in preserving their identity. The programme, funded by Global Affairs Canada, culminated in a grand concluding ceremony that celebrated the spirit of Tibetan culture and unity.

While the event was a roaring success, the notable absence of some participants hinted at underlying geopolitical tensions. The meet’s significance goes beyond just a cultural gathering—it’s a statement of resistance and resilience in the face of adversity.
