Sikyong Penpa Tsering, the political leader of the Tibetan government-in-exile, recently concluded significant meetings in Europe with French and Swiss officials. His visits focused on Tibet’s historical role and its potential impact on policy changes regarding China.

Visit to France

On April 30, 2024, Sikyong Penpa Tsering attended a special ceremony in Paris, where he participated in honoring Andre Gattolin, a strong supporter of Tibet. At this event, Sikyong presented a photo signed by the Dalai Lama and French President Emmanuel Macron, highlighting the enduring friendship and support for the Tibetan cause.

Engagement in Switzerland

Before arriving in Paris, Sikyong spent time in Bern, Switzerland, meeting with key members of the Swiss Parliament. According to Tibet.net, Sikyong held in-depth discussions with Swiss leaders about Tibet‘s role in fostering positive changes in China. He emphasized the importance of both internal and external forces in bringing about change, stating, “If you want to bring positive change in China, you need both internal and external forces, and we are the internal forces.”

Discussions on the Middle Way Policy

During his meetings, Sikyong advocated for the Middle Way Policy, which seeks a peaceful, negotiated resolution for Tibet within the framework of Chinese sovereignty. He urged the Swiss parliamentarians to recognize Tibet’s historical status, which he believes adds significant value to this policy.

Calls for a Shift in Swiss Policy

Sikyong‘s visit comes at a time when many European countries are reevaluating their policies towards China. He encouraged Switzerland to adopt a pragmatic approach in its dealings with China. MP Maya Graf, reflecting on the discussions, supported the need for a shift, recognizing the importance of historical context in shaping current policies.

Culmination of the Visit

The visit included a luncheon in the Swiss Parliament, attended by influential Swiss and Tibetan representatives, where Sikyong expressed his gratitude to Rene Longet, co-founder of the Swiss Parliamentary Group for Tibet, for his long-standing support.

Dinner with Swiss Leaders

On the evening before his departure to Paris, Sikyong had dinner with Eric Nussbaumer, Speaker of the Swiss National Council, further discussing Tibet‘s position and future strategies.
