Tashi jong, India – In a setting defined by the warmth of the sun and joyful faces, His Holiness the Dalai Lama marked the inauguration of the Khamgar Druk Dharmakara College at Tashi Jong. An event which brought together communities, scholars, and dignitaries to celebrate Tibetan Buddhist heritage and the enduring promise of education.

Eager crowds lined the streets, as the revered Tibetan spiritual leader embarked on his journey to the college. Gyutö Monastery residents, Tibetan Children’s Village (TCV) students, teachers, and staff at Gopalpur were among those who extended warm greetings, many brandishing white silk scarves as a symbol of respect and reverence.

Upon reaching the Tashi Jong community, His Holiness the Dalai Lama was received with heartfelt smiles from individuals donned in their best attire. His Holiness then proceeded to symbolically open the main academic building, by cutting a ribbon at the entrance and lighting an inaugural lamp inside.

After assuming his seat, a series of offerings and prayers for his long life took center stage. Emphasizing the importance of the day, Khamtrul Rinpoché addressed His Holiness the Dalai Lama as “the master of the entire teaching of the Buddha” and as “a champion of peace throughout the world.”

Rinpoché’s historical insights provided a glance into the Khampagar Monastery’s legacy, detailing its initial foundation by the first Khamtrul Rinpoché, encouragement from the great Fifth Dalai Lama, and later endorsement by the 13th Dalai Lama.

Further underlining the significance, Sikyong Penpa Tsering, President of the Central Tibetan Administration, cited the academic accomplishments of past students and the broader aspirations for the Tibetan community.

During his keynote, His Holiness the Dalai Lama remarked, “Today, the Tibetan Buddhist Tradition, which has been restricted by communist Chinese forces in Tibet, is flourishing because of the strong faith of the Tibetan people… Scientists in particular are interested in what we have to say about the workings of the mind and emotions and the nature of reality.”

Before concluding the event, Khenpo Lobsang Sangpo expressed profound gratitude, addressing His Holiness as the “master of the entire teaching of the Buddha and champion of peace in the world.”

As His Holiness and guests settled for lunch, the underlying message of the day was evident: Beyond its physical edifice, the Khamgar Druk Dharmakara College stands as a testament to the resilient spirit of the Tibetan people and their dedication to preserving their rich traditions and culture.
