His Holiness the Dalai Lama, during his visit to West Bengal, India, was honored with an Official State Luncheon at Samman Bhawan, the Chief Minister of Sikkim’s residence. The Tibetan spiritual leader was welcomed with traditional Tibetan dances and rituals, including the ‘Chema Changpu’. This news was reported by the official website of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

After the luncheon in Sikkim, His Holiness traveled to Salugara, West Bengal, by helicopter. There, he was greeted by crowds of people and more traditional Tibetan performances as he arrived at the Sed-Gyued Monastery. The monastery was beautifully decorated with marigold flowers for his visit.

In Salugara, His Holiness gave teachings at the monastery, emphasizing the importance of study in religious practice. He advised the followers that mere participation in rituals is not enough; understanding the teachings through study is essential. His Holiness stressed the need to discipline the mind as the key to happiness and peace.

Addressing a large gathering, His Holiness spoke about the essence of Buddhism, highlighting that it involves not only rituals but also the use of the mind to overcome mental afflictions and disturbing emotions. He also discussed secular ethics, an ethical system based on human values that are independent of religious beliefs.

His Holiness reminded everyone of the universal need for love and affection, starting from the care of a mother at birth. He emphasized that building peace in the world begins with cultivating peace of mind and harmonious relationships among people, transcending divisions of ‘us’ and ‘them’.

During his teachings, His Holiness also touched upon the significance of Bodhichitta, a central concept in Buddhism focusing on cultivating an altruistic attitude towards others. He shared his personal practice of Bodhichitta, stating it brings him peace of mind and helps improve his physical well-being.

The Dalai Lama‘s visit to Salugara and his teachings at the Sed-Gyued Monastery highlight his ongoing commitment to spreading messages of peace, compassion, and understanding, both within the Buddhist community and beyond. His teachings are a testament to his dedication to nurturing human values and promoting global harmony.
