German MEP’s Aide Detained for Alleged Spying for China

In a shocking development that has captured international attention, Jian Guo, a top aide to Maximilian Krah, a Member of the European Parliament from Germany’s Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party, has been arrested on espionage charges. Reports from Germany’s federal prosecutor’s office, as cited by sources including Tibet Express and Radio Free Asia (RFA), revealed that Guo was detained in Dresden for allegedly passing sensitive information to a Chinese intelligence agency.

According to prosecutors, Guo, who is a German citizen, has been accused of sharing details about European Parliament negotiations and decisions with Chinese intelligence as early as January this year. Krah confirmed Guo’s arrest, stating that he learned about the incident through the media.

The case has raised significant concerns over China’s efforts to infiltrate and influence overseas democratic movements. Sheng Xue, a Canada-based writer and activist, noted in her statements to RFA that Guo was a familiar face in pro-democracy circles and held significant positions such as director of the Federation for a Democratic China and secretary-general of the China Republican Party. These roles reportedly gave him deep access to sensitive information.

Further complicating the matter is Guo’s connection to Tibetan organizations. He is known to have visited Dharamsala, the seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile, and even met the Dalai Lama. A post by another activist, Su Yutong, who spoke out on X (formerly Twitter), detailed Guo’s activities within these groups, raising alarm among Tibetan, Uighur, and other communities about the potential risks posed by such infiltrations.

The German authorities’ discovery of Guo’s alleged espionage activities has ignited debates about the reach of Beijing’s surveillance operations outside China’s borders. Cheng Shih-kuang, a political commentator based in Germany, emphasized the extensive efforts by the Chinese Communist Party to plant “moles” within foreign nations to sway politics, economy, media, and academia.

This arrest follows a broader pattern of accusations against China for its international espionage activities, which Beijing has dismissed as “hype aimed at smearing China,” according to statements made earlier this week.

As this high-profile case unfolds, it underscores the ongoing tensions between China and various countries over espionage and the suppression of overseas dissidents. The international community continues to watch closely as further details and implications of Guo’s activities are expected to emerge.
