Taiwan’s Taoyuan International Airport recently transformed into a mock battlefield for the first time on Wednesday, July 26, serving as a stage for the Taiwanese military’s preparation against potential threats from mainland China, CNN reported.

This carefully planned simulation was a direct response to escalating tensions in the region, reflecting Taiwan’s strategic preparations for potential conflict scenarios involving China, a situation that has grown more alarming since the onset of the Ukrainian crisis instigated by Russia.

In the exercise, the Ministry of National Defense of Taiwan aimed to assess the efficacy of its multi-faceted military response and cross-branch collaboration, in the event of an incursion by Chinese forces. The airport, Taiwan’s primary international hub, buzzed with activity, hosting soldiers and military helicopters.

Beijing has historically staked a territorial claim on Taiwan, despite never administering the island. In recent times, China’s threats of potential force against Taiwan and increased military posturing around the island, including regular incursions into its air defense identification zone, have added to Taipei’s concerns.

In the course of the simulation, soldiers clad in red helmets, representing enemy invaders, were engaged in a faux firefight with airport law enforcement. Concurrently, firefighters were seen combatting simulated conflagrations. Military helicopters staged enemy troop deployments on the airport grounds, facing off against Taiwan’s defense forces.

As per the CNN report, the comprehensive exercise culminated with Taiwan’s forces purging remaining hypothetical enemies and raising Taiwan’s flag as a symbol of the successful defense of the airport. This 30-minute drill underscores Taiwan’s vigilance and readiness to counter any potential threats to its sovereignty.
