In the serene hills of Dharamshala, the Central Tibetan Administration’s Women’s Empowerment Desk kicked off a pivotal three-day conference on November 3, 2023. The ‘Dialogue on Women’s Empowerment within the Tibetan Community’ held at Asia Health Resorts has become a beacon for progressive change, as reported by Tibet.net, the community’s touchstone for news and updates.

The conference, under the patronage of Sikyong Penpa Tsering, aims to address vital issues concerning gender equality and empowerment within the Tibetan society. Emphasizing the criticality of the event, Sikyong in his opening remarks highlighted that this is the 16th Kashag’s maiden conference on the subject since taking office, as stated on Tibet.net.

Sikyong passionately called for active participation, hoping to collate actionable and pragmatic suggestions tailored to the Tibetan societal fabric that would aid in revising current women empowerment policies. He also spotlighted the dire need to eradicate gender-based violence, marking a pivotal shift towards egalitarianism.

Echoing Sikyong’s sentiments, special guest Dr. Poonam Smith Sreen, Deputy Director of the General Development Office at USAID, noted the unique cultural backdrop of the Tibetan society and praised the initiative for creating a platform for much-needed dialogue and action.

The conference will run through November 5, and its agenda includes a variety of themes such as leadership roles for women in Tibetan administration, health, mental health, education, legal issues, and addressing violence against women. It will see participation from secretaries of various departments, members of the sexual harassment prevention committee, and representatives from non-governmental organizations, totaling 64 attendees.

The event, according to Tibet.net, aims to harness insights from these discussions to shape a more inclusive and empowering future for the women of the Tibetan community.
