Delhi University (DU) is set to enhance its educational offerings with the creation of a Centre for Advanced Studies in Buddhist Studies, as approved by the Ministry of Minority Affairs. This initiative, backed by an investment of approximately Rs 35 crore, aligns with the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK) and the “Buddhist Development Plan” (BDP), aiming to revive and promote Buddhist studies.
The move comes in response to a rising demand for focused studies on Buddhism, aiming to bolster educational opportunities for minority communities. This new centre on DU’s campus will facilitate undergraduate, postgraduate, PhD, and research programmes in Buddhist studies, India Today reports on march 15th.
The curriculum, spanning from certificate to PhD levels, will be developed in collaboration with subject-matter experts to cater specifically to the needs of minority students. Additionally, DU plans to host training programmes and workshops to improve the teaching capabilities and subject knowledge of its faculty members involved in Buddhist studies.
According to Times of India, this centre is not only an educational venture but also a step towards preserving the rich cultural and linguistic heritage of Buddhism. Before the construction begins, the empowered committee of PMJVK will meticulously review the detailed cost estimates provided by the university to ensure the efficient use of funds.
Moreover, in an effort to broaden its academic horizons, DU will introduce a “science for happiness” program in five of its women colleges as an elective subject, in partnership with the Rekhi Foundation. This initiative aims to enrich the academic experience by exploring the concept of happiness and well-being. The participating colleges include Lady Shri Ram College for Women, Daulat Ram College, Gargi College, Indraprastha Women’s College, and Miranda House.
Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh highlighted the importance of incorporating the science of happiness into the curriculum, emphasizing the need to understand happiness as a crucial aspect of education.
This development reflects DU’s commitment to providing diverse and comprehensive education, addressing both the intellectual and emotional well-being of its students. The establishment of the Centre for Advanced Studies in Buddhist Studies marks a significant step towards enhancing the study of Buddhism and promoting a deeper understanding of its cultural and historical significance.
