The world mourns the passing of Mangosuthu Buthelezi, the esteemed Zulu prince and veteran South African politician, who died at the age of 95. His death was confirmed in an official statement by President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa on Saturday, 09 September.

Among the many global leaders expressing their condolences, His Holiness the Dalai Lama shared his profound sorrow upon hearing the news. In a heartfelt message, he remembered Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi as not just a personal friend but also a staunch supporter of the Tibetan people.

His Holiness remarked, “I have had the honour of meeting him several times. He was a good friend to me and also to the Tibetan people. He lived a meaningful life till the age of 95.” He further acknowledged the late prince’s unwavering support for the Tibetan cause, stating, “We remain grateful for the late Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi’s interest in and steadfast support for the dignity and freedom of our Tibetan people.”

Mangosuthu Buthelezi, who founded the Inkatha Freedom Party, played a pivotal role in South Africa’s political landscape. After reconciling differences with the African National Congress party (ANC) in 1994, he served two terms as the minister of home affairs in the post-apartheid government.

His Holiness concluded his tribute by offering prayers for the departed Zulu leader, reflecting the deep respect and admiration he held for Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi.
