In a gesture of goodwill, His Holiness the Dalai Lama reached out to Alexander Stubb, congratulating him on his recent election as the President of Finland. From his residence in Dharamsala, India, the spiritual leader expressed his fond memories of Finland, a country he has visited multiple times.

His Holiness appreciated the warm reception and genuine interest shown by the Finnish people in his messages of love, compassion, and the unity of humanity. He also highlighted the importance of inter-religious harmony during these interactions.

His Holiness shared his concerns about the current global climate, where violent conflicts cause widespread suffering. As an advocate for a world without violence and weapons, the Dalai Lama expressed his hope for the international community to embrace dialogue and diplomacy to resolve disputes, fostering a more peaceful and compassionate global environment.

His Holiness concluded his message by wishing Stubb success in addressing the challenges and opportunities ahead, aiming to fulfill the aspirations of the Finnish people.

In related news, as reported by BBC, Alexander Stubb, Finland’s former Prime Minister and a member of the conservative party, triumphed in the presidential elections.

With a final vote tally of 51.6%, Stubb edged out his competitor, Pekka Haavisto of the Green Party, who secured 48.4% of the votes. Haavisto has since conceded defeat in what was a closely contested race.

This election holds particular significance as it is the first since Finland’s induction into the NATO military alliance. Stubb, 55, has been vocal about his firm approach towards Russia, especially given Finland’s extensive shared border with the nation.

His stance became even more pronounced following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces in February 2022, a move that expedited Finland’s NATO membership, making it the alliance’s 31st member in April of the same year.

As President, Stubb will assume significant responsibilities, notably in shaping Finland’s foreign and security policies. He will also serve as the commander-in-chief of the Finnish armed forces.

His tenure is set to begin on March 1, succeeding Sauli Niinisto in the role. Stubb’s leadership comes at a crucial time as Finland navigates its new role within NATO and its relationship with neighboring Russia.
