China has announced a significant increase in its defense budget, upping it by 7.2% to 1.67 trillion yuan ($231 billion) for the year 2024, amidst ongoing tensions with neighboring countries and internal efforts against corruption within its military ranks.
This move places China‘s defense expenditure at its highest level in five years, signaling a strong intent to bolster its military capabilities amid disputes over Taiwan, border tensions with India, and claims in the South China Sea, as reported by First Post on March 5, 2024.
Interestingly, the increase in defense spending outpaces the country’s economic growth target of about 5%, suggesting a prioritization of military strength even as China aims for economic development.
