Tibetans in Northeast India Tear Copy of China’s Ethnic Unity Law

Tibetans from northeastern India rejected China’s so-called Ethnic Unity and Progress Law during a press conference at Guwahati Press Club on July 29. The Shillong-led Northeast India Tibetan People’s Movement said the law is being used to erase Tibetan language, identity, culture, and religion. Organizers had planned a large peaceful protest in Guwahati, with Tibetans expected from Dimapur, Tawang, Tezpur, Shillong, and Guwahati, but postponed it because of flooding in Assam. At the press conference, participants also spoke about Pawo Lobga Rangzen’s July 2 self-immolation outside the United Nations and tore a copy of the law before reporters.
