Tibetans and Japanese supporters gathered in Tokyo for a “Unite for Tibet” event held as part of the Global Day of Action honoring Pawo Lobga Rangzen. The gathering remembered Rangzen, who passed away after a self-immolation protest outside the United Nations headquarters in New York on July 2. Participants called attention to the Tibetan cause and the policies they say threaten Tibet’s identity, culture, religion, and rights. The event also linked Rangzen’s final appeal for Tibetan unity and freedom with international efforts to oppose China’s newly enacted Ethnic Unity and Progress Law and seek a peaceful future for Tibet.
